This conference holds special importance as it is being held at a juncture of significant growth and progress domestically as well as heightened popular awareness at the regional and international arenas.

This conference was conceived to provide a forum for intensive dialogue that would prepare the ground for a transitional phase. This has become necessary as our country is entering a new historical period of rapid growth and promising opportunities and when the Eritrean people as a whole and the national associations, government institutions, the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in their respective areas of responsibility, have embarked on the tasks of development and nation building with greater awareness and better organization and are engaged in the design and elaboration of strategic national plans as well as their implementation in a synergetic manner.

The Eritrean Youth Movement whose concrete role is enshrined in history is an integral part of the broad and formidable struggle of the Eritrean people and cannot be properly appreciated in isolation. The aims and objectives of the national associations, government bodies, PFDJ departments, even those of friends and partners can be no different from and defer to the primary and sovereign interests of the Eritrean people to achieve prosperity and development.

MeKete  (struggle, resistance) is only a means; the goal is sovereignty, equitable development and prosperity for the Eritrean people. Even as we are confronted by zigzags, ups and downs and obstacles, our national compass unfailingly points to our steadfast goals. Whatever our aspirations as individuals, they can only be achieved among our people and within the nation that we call home; Our individual comfort, serenity and prosperity is intertwined with comfort, serenity and prosperity of the Eritrean people. This understanding must constantly underpin our awareness and state of mind and it must also serve as the basis of our strategy and tactics, which in turn need to be based on a profound and correct understanding of the realities we face. Moreover, it is imperative that we develop strong organization as no goal can be achieved in the absence of a capable and dynamic organization. This organization needs to provide synergy and create complementarity between the youth movement, the popular associations, government institutions and PFDJ bodies, all of whom have their own mission and competencies. Without such a network mechanism based on a common understanding and effective coordination it is not possible to achieve our strategic goals. This is not a new discovery for us, but the secret behind the victory of our liberation struggle.

And yet, historical phases are not identical as each phase has its own unique circumstances. Our liberation struggle had its unique characteristics and so does the present nation building phase. The current phase of our history requires that we go beyond general and superficial judgments; deepen our grasp of the opportunities and challenges that we face, base our strategies and plans on accurate information and objective assessments and most importantly develop strong organization.

This is the reason that today’s conference, as well as upcoming similar conferences, are expected to anchor themselves on our national values and the overarching interests of our people, take as their departure an accurate assessment of present and future opportunities and challenges, define the mission of the youth who in the history of our national liberation struggle-as in that of other peoples-played the decisive role both in terms of sheer numbers as well as the quality of their participation, develop plans for the upcoming struggle which will be waged on all fronts and finally, delineate the outlines of a new chapter with stronger organization.
I wish your conference success.

May the flag of our martyrs fly high!

  1. wedi afewerki,
Eritrea is in your hand begging for real and honest change. If you keep on saying and doing the same thing, nothing will change for better.
Better put new ideas and changes to move forward. Stop “bado mebtsA”, as this will not take Eritrea forward.
The question is that are you defending the interests of Eritrea by ill treating the young Eritreans who are abandoning Eritrea? How many Eritreans had arrived in United Kingdom as refugees in the last ten years? in South Africa? in Israel? in Sudan? in Angola? in Sweden? in Norway? Why?
How do you defend Eritrea by jailing Aster Yohanes, Senait Debesay, Dawit Issaak, Miriam Hagos … or the pentes who were caught praying?
There are many educated Eritreans in jail than there are in Asmara city walking. You can not even use the educated prisoners properly. They are languishing and counting days for nothing.
You see how America, Australia, Canada, EU take care of their interests, they are taking in every Eritrean refugee that Eritrea spent more than 12 years of giving free education. The Americans and EU spent not a penny to educate the young Eritreans leaving Eritrea. These Eritrean refugees are paying more 20% of their incomes as taxes to these nations which invested nothing. However, you invested so much on them to get nothing.
Who is the loser the USA, the EU or Eritrea?

    • Like your comment except for the last paragraph of 20% income tax. They pay this to benefit out of it in days of need and for their children and also as nationals of their adopted country.Isaias government, however, benefits out of the remittance that these refuges sent to their relatives in Eritrea and at the same time gets ride of them so that no enough educated and nationalistic persons remain in Eritrea to challenge his failed policy. Another think is that his discourses including this one is full of ambiguity and is generic ….. flowery words without same thing tangable. It is never simple, direct and to the point fit to the Eritrean audiance.

    • nice explanation,,,,nice nice

  2. Thanks to his excellency our president and his clear vission up his youth,Eritrea will be a heaven in the ground. For sure the hell administration(USA),will shortly ashame of its bad deeds to the people of Eritrea over the century

    Happy New Year to all,

May it be a year of peace and love to all of you,

I want to thank the editor and publisher of erigazette.org for promoting the freedom of speech. I may not agree with his politics sometimes and he may not agree with my comments most of the time. However, he is working hard to promote his dear political convictions, and I stand with him.
In the new year, I will try to be more critical but very constructive to my convictions.
For today, I recommend you a very good cultural website about the Saho people. It has brief historical and cultural pieces, few but beautiful photographs, videos of Saho music, and oral history. It is
    http://www.allsaho.com/audio
The treasure of this web site is that it has good collection of new and old Saho music. The early modern Saho music of the 1960s are well composed and arranged, except the record is not remastered in stereo. This has to done as soon as possible and published in two or three CD volumes.
When I was very young growing up in Asmara, I had heard the Eritrean Police Orchestra or the Asmara Municipio Orchestra playing the classic Yi Assina, originally by the legendary Ali Mahamed, one of Eritrea`s modern music composers and teacher to many orchestra players, music director and band leader. I am disappointed allsaho.com did not include biographies of prominent artists from the Saho people, even in Saho language.
My big disappointment of http://www.allsaho.com is that there was not a single article written in the beautiful and Horn Africa`s first living languages and the linguistic culture that begat the Belewkelew, the Axumites and the Adulites, with all its maritime powers –the Saho language! This is way before the English and the Arabic languages started to walk that the allsaho has used to plaster on its pages.
I am disappointed the allsaho is not “all“ at all without the Saho language that is supposed to be the pride of the entire Horn culture and its history. If allsaho.com can not stand for the Saho language on its web site, who will defend this beautiful language.

allsaho.com needs to learn from the many kushitic based languages and websites such as its sisters the Afar af and Oromiffaa.

May it be again the year of peace and love to you all.

moqshish, thanks to all saho.com, listen sarigoble by Ali Abdalla. Do not also miss the classic Yi Asina by Ali Mohamed.

    Adulis
    ———————–
Thanks to allsaho.com, the word “Adulis“ is originally from Saho from “Adu Lai“ which is “white water”. This also shows the Saho people are the source of early and ancient civilizations in this region, long before Judaism, Christianity and Islam showed up on our sea coasts. If we are not proud of who we were and who we are, we will not a have a promising future. We need to discover our past to look the future very clearly

  4. How many Eritreans had arrived in United Kingdom as refugees in the last ten years? in South Africa? in Israel? in Sudan? in Angola? in Sweden? in Norway? Why?…. …….Young people will leave Eritrea for better life with or with out isyas……
