ADDIS ABABA, May 10 (Reuters) – On the outskirts of Addis Ababa, a muezzin leads a solemn sermon at a mosque before thousands of worshippers stamp their feet to protest against what they say is the Ethiopian government’s interference in religious affairs.
Protests are uncommon in tightly-controlled Ethiopia, and the unrest has caused concern in the predominantly Christian nation that takes pride in centuries of coexistence.

There is a risk of strong tension throughout the country as worshipers leave the mosques on 11 May. There could be demonstrations, comparable with the one in Addis Ababa on 4 May which gathered a crowd of several thousand. This movement is protesting against the government’s Ahbashism campaign that uses Lebanese Muslim clerics to fight against Ethiopian preachers considered too close to Wahhabism (ION 1329). However, these reactions were fuelled by the brutal repression, resulting in deaths, of other demonstrations last week in the town of Assasa.  Continue reading »

In recent weeks, the White House has announced a stepped-up drone campaign in Yemen [Al Jazeera]

Washington, DC - In Washington, it’s a case of a good-news story gone very wrong: An intelligence success perhaps partly undone by political opportunism and indiscipline, amid signs that American policy in Yemen is set to repeat errors seen elsewhere. And in both cases, it is the political leadership in the US capital which is to blame.

It is election time in many parts of Africa. Advocates will disappear or suddenly die mysteriously or are just murdered.  A recent example is the West African nation of Mali.

An election was scheduled and the incumbent was favored to win.  A faction didn’t like the odds and hired the military to engineer a coup.  Now this peaceful, democratic nation is in turmoil.  Tranquility shifted to chaos in several weeks. Continue reading »
